Since instruments disagree on the pitch of middle C, we need to transpose so they sound at the same pitch.

When a trumpet reads C, it sounds like a Bb on the piano - eg a 2nd lower. So to duet with piano, the trumpet written note needs to be transposed a 2nd higher.


Transposing for instruments involves changing the key the piece is written.

1) First work out the new key -  to which it must be moved.

eg consider writing a piece for Eb sax. Eb is called the saxophone's concert pitch - the pitch of the piano note it sounds when reading "C".
